Vintage Duck Decoy, Preening Duck
$4,350.00
Here is a decoy from large collection of vintage decoys I bought. Most are not identified. I'll list what details I know. If you think you know the company, carver, or duck type message me and I'll add that to the listing if I can confirm it.
This is an amazing vintage decoy I've never seen. It was found in California (though it could have come from anywhere), carver unknown. Decoy is of a preening duck. Shows the wear one would expect in an old decoy.
Head is turned back in the preening position with the wing on that side raised. A carved round circle for each eye. Bill is carved open. To do this without breaking, the head is made in two parts, with wood grain at 90 degrees to each other. Inside of the bill shows the same age toning as the rest of the bird. The raised wing and tail have carved lines in them, while the tucked wing is flat. Bottom the decoy is flat, with no markings.
Decoy is made of a heavy, dense wood, not sure what species. I see no signs of repaint. The joints between head and bill, and neck and body are tight and solid. No missing pieces, but lots of wear spots to the paint. There is what appears to be one lead shot hole in the top of the raised wing. Bottom of the decoy shows some light checking as the wood dried. Size is about 12" long, 6" high, and 5" wide.
In old decoys, exact painting wasn't the norm as it is with today's "realistic" artists. Body is a dark brown color, with green splashed on the wings and a splotch of red for the eyes and bill.
This is quite probably a one-of-a-kind decoy. I've shown this to a couple of my fellow dealers who deal with antique hunting items. They couldn't identify the artist, but both said I should be putting this in a specialized auction as it should bring well into the upper 4 figures if not higher. I can't confirm that, just reporting what they said. I've done extensive searches online and can find nothing even close to it.
For those of you who like to collect the unusual, here's one you don't want to miss.

As always, buy more than one item from my shop and I'll combine the shipping. I don't make a profit on shipping like some sellers do. However, etsy's calculator doesn't do well with combined orders, so you may get a partial refund of your shipping cost after you have paid for the order.
Keep in mind that many of my items are one-of-a-kind, and I have local customers looking at them. If you buy something that has just sold locally and wasn't yet removed, the order will be cancelled and your full payment returned to you, unless I have a similar item in stock. You can always contact me before your purchase to confirm the item is still available.
