Here is something you'll likely never find again, because it is an experimental piece. Westmoreland would sometimes do color trials of individual pieces to see if they would be marketable. This piece came from one of those color trials, probably in the late 1960's.

A client of mine is a lifelong Westmoreland collector who knew many of the Westmoreland factory people, met them at shows and factory visits, and hosted them in their home. John Schnupp, plant manager of Westmoreland, sold this basket to them during one of those factory visits, saying it was a one-of-a-kind piece. However, a few others were made, making it rare, but not a One Only piece.

This basket is done in the paneled grape design. Most people know this pattern as a milk glass pattern. However, trials were done in other colors. This one was done in transparent glass in a smoke color. Most of the handle was left in smoke color, while the basket portion was iridized to turn it into a carnival glass basket. Very strongly iridescent in gold, purple, and blue colors. It has the Westmoreland hallmark on the bottom.

Adding to the attraction of this piece is the size. This one is about 11.5" tall with a 4" base. Most of the baskets Westmoreland did were smaller sizes. This basket makes a very attractive and eye-catching display.

Even David Doty's carnival glass site lists no vintage carnival glass pieces in the paneled grape pattern, in ANY color or shape. After Westmoreland's closing in 1984, some newer pieces have been made, it seems mostly in water or punch sets.

"Rare" is a term you find overused all the time in online descriptions. However, this basket truly fits the definition. For anyone who collects amazingly rare glass, or likes to collect color trials, this is a must.

As always, buy more than one item from my shop and I'll combine the shipping. I don't make a profit on shipping like some sellers do. However, etsy's calculator doesn't do well with combined orders, so you may get a partial refund of your shipping cost after you have paid for the order.

Keep in mind that many of my items are one-of-a-kind, and I have local customers looking at them. If you buy something that has just sold locally and wasn't yet removed, the order will be cancelled and your full payment returned to you, unless I have a similar item in stock. You can always contact me before your purchase to confirm the item is still available.
