Here is a very unusual antique German sulphide marble. This one is a squirrel. I picked this up from a fellow marble dealer at a marble show. Neither of us had seen one like it, nor had others at the show. When found, the marble was so banged up he couldn't see inside it, so it had to be polished. Inside, he found this squirrel in a tan-beige color. As you can see in the pictures, it also appeared a child had tried to crack out the squirrel, as there is a "Y" shaped crack surrounding the figure. The polishing also had to cut down to the top if the squirrel's head.
Another thing makes this marble unusual. All sulphides have air trapped next to them, giving them a silvery sheen. This one also has the microscopic air bubbles one can easily see with a 10x loupe. However, a couple of these appear to be flat, suggesting they are aventurine or mica. I have not seen this in a sulphide before.
Had this been an original marble in good shape, it might have been valued as high as $2,000-$3,000. Being polished and damaged, it won't be close to that. However, if someone would like an example of a very rare marble for their reference collection, I'll let it go at a much reduced cost! Size is a 1-5/16" in diameter. loc:shcs
